Sasha’s UK Top 20 hit “Be As One” features the lilting vocals of Maria Nayler. Brilliant B-side “Heart Of Imagination” is a collaboration with Brian Transeau; unfortunately, the track is savagely edited on the CD single.

INFO > One of the more rewarding aspects of maintaining this blog is learning the stories behind the music. Composed by American songwriters Hal Hackady and Lee Pockriss, “Kites” was a UK Top 10 hit in 1967 for Simon Dupree And The Big Sound, comprised of Scottish brothers Phil, Derek, and Ray Shulman.
Interestingly, the brothers Shulman resented the song’s success, as it was not representative of their true sound. Pressured by both their label and management for more chart hits, the Shulmans abandoned The Big Sound in 1969 and reformed the following year as Gentle Giant, a prog rock project that pushed musical boundaries throughout the 1970s.
Brendan Beal, Mark McGuire, and Maria Nayler covered “Kites” for their 1990 debut as Ultraviolet. Flipside “Fly” is an instrumental version, and the ‘Fantasy Flite Part One’ remix is featured on Sasha & John Digweed’s “Northern Exposure” mix collection.
01 Will You Be With Me
02 Love Is The God (Edit)
03 Naked And Sacred (Gregorio Mix)
04 Love Is The God (Sugar Bush Vocal)
INFO > Co-written by Maria Nayler and Sasha, “Love Is The God” was intended as Nayler’s second single; however, only promo releases were made available. Instead, the song was commercially issued as a double A-side single alongside “Will You Be With Me.” The CD includes Gregorio’s remix of “Naked And Sacred”; Tom Hayes’ trance take on “Love Is The God” is appended here as a bonus.
01 Naked And Sacred (Radio Edit)
02 Naked And Sacred (R.I.P. Vocal Mix)
03 Naked And Sacred (R.I.P’s Wah Wah Dub)
04 The Other Side (Edit)
INFO > For her solo debut, Maria Nayler covered Chynna Phillips’ “Naked And Sacred.” It was the first of three singles intended to promote Nayler’s still unreleased album. The CD features garage mixes from Omar Adimora & Tim Deluxe, and “The Other Side”—a Sasha production which borrows elements from his track “Arkham Asylum.”

INFO > Robert Miles (Roberto Concina) came to fame with the international hit “Children”, which started the ‘dream trance’ sub-genre of the mid-1990s. Following the release of Miles’ debut album, the success of his fourth single, “One & One”, prompted its inclusion on subsequent international issues and special editions. “One & One” features the vocal talents of Maria Nayler, and remixes from John Graham, David Morales, and Joe T. Vanelli (both UK CD singles are consolidated here).
