INFO > Before he became ‘lord of the trance,’ Paul Oakenfold marched to the beats of many different drummers. In the early 1980s, Paul made a living as a chef until pal Trevor Fung introduced him to a set of turntables. Time spent in New York would develop Paul’s appreciation for house and hip hop, and then a summer spent spinning in Ibiza would pave the path for Paul’s future as the world’s most famous DJ. After a previous failure with club night Funhouse, Paul successfully brought the Balearic vibe to the UK in the form of Spectrum at London’s Heaven nightclub in 1987, followed by the equally popular Future and Land of Oz.

Oakenfold’s production career began in 1986 with a remix of “Girls Ain’t Nothing But Trouble” by DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince, who Paul had signed to Champion in the UK. In 1988, Paul engineered releases by The Project Club, a pseudonym for Rob Davis, with whom Oakenfold would continue to collaborate for many years. For their first outing as Electra, Oakenfold and Davis recorded a cover of Elkin & Nelson’s Afro-flavored 1979 single, “Jibaro.” Steve Osborne joined Electra in 1989, which led to a long-term partnership with Oakenfold; the two would become highly sought-after producers after working with Happy Mondays on “Pills ‘N’ Thrills and Bellyaches.”
