WARNING! Sappy personal nostalgia follows below:

My high school class Senior Prom was held exactly 30 years ago, on 11 June 1987. A couple of months prior to the event, a vote was conducted to decide the prom’s theme song. After whittling down the options, the top two contenders were Heatwave’s “Always And Forever” (1977) and Alphaville’s “Forever Young” (1984). Alas, the last dance of the evening was “Always And Forever.” Perhaps the anti-nuclear war sentiment of “Forever Young” was just a bit too plaintive given the Cold War tension of that era (then President Ronald Reagan delivered his “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!” speech in West Berlin on the day after the prom).

NEHS Senior Prom 1987

Forever Young

Let’s dance in style, let’s dance for a while
Heaven can wait, we’re only watching the skies
Hoping for the best, but expecting the worst
Are you going to drop the bomb or not??

Let us die young or let us live forever
We don’t have the power, but we never say never
Sitting in a sandpit, life is a short trip
The music’s for the sad men

Can you imagine when this race is won?
Turn our golden faces into the sun
Praising our leaders, we’re getting in tune
The music’s played by the madmen

Forever young, I want to be forever young
Do you really want to live forever
Forever – and ever

Some are like water, some are like the heat
Some are a melody and some are the beat
Sooner or later, they all will be gone
Why don’t they stay young?

It’s so hard to get old without a cause
I don’t want to perish like a fading horse
Youth’s like diamonds in the sun
And diamonds are forever

So many adventures couldn’t happen today
So many songs we forgot to play
So many dreams swinging out of the blue
We’ll let them come true

Forever young, I want to be forever young
Do you really want to live forever?

Nostalgia is touching. :) This series is fan*tast*ic! Thank you so much.

  2. Amazing post! Thanks, as always, for the share and the brilliant prom pic. Wish I had one now, we were too cool. Our loss.

    • I think we can all easily agree that this song is a TOP 20 Pop song of all time!!!

thank you for the various versions … even the demo version is pretty good!

I feel like they should also release a piano version of that song!

    • Thought about you today, Nedzad. I have been really digging this Psytrance group from Serbia lately: Norma Project (Gradimir Stojiljkovic), especially Walking On The Moon … you should give it a listen, if you are not already aware of them.

  4. Awesome Shelf, just awesome. Think we had the same hair style in 1987 which makes me smile. Thanks bud!

  5. Well, I remember the music at our prom being pretty horrible at best, Poison’s – “Every Rose Has It’s Thorn” followed up by That Time Of My Life song …ya’know the one from that Dirty Dancing movie ..I think it had Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnsomething……blaaah .. I’d take “Forever Young” any day..great tune and great post (as always).

    • Damn, that’s pretty sad if “Every Rose Has It’s Thorn” was one of the BEST tunes at your prom. Sorry Sandman :-(

We had an awesome DJ at our senior prom – at the height of the night, dude created a live whirlwind mix of the best tracks ever. Danced like it was the last night on Earth.

      • Sad indeed… about the only tune the guy played that was decent, was LL Cool J’s “I Need Love” , …I would have gone with “Going Back To Cali”, but I think the DJ was clueless. …
