In 1986, part-time DJs Matt Black and Jonathan More joined forces to flex their sampling skills on white label 12″ “Say Kids What Time Is It?” The duo was heralded for their innovative production, and later established the Ahead Of Our Time label, which launched in 1987 with the proto-big beat single “Beats + Pieces.” Coldcut debuted vocalist Yasmin ‘Yazz’ Evans on their next release, “Doctorin’ The House”, which peaked at 6 on the UK Singles Chart.

  1. I absolutely love this track … there were about ten acid house-ish tracks that still stand out to me today (Beat Dis, Pump Up The Volume, Dr. Acid & Mr. House, etc.) and this is definitely one of them! These beats and samples seemed so far ahead of their time and my parents were nice enough to let me blast them in the car!

I wonder if somebody has that original 1987 white label 12″ “Say Kids What Time Is It?”

  2. nice one thanks, only got my uk cd.

  3. Oh yeah!, bought this 12″ back in the day… never played it all the way through ,because I would mix it with another single. Many moons later, I played the single in it’s entirety and discovered the “plastic man” ..sample at the end.. such a fun record. Thanks Shelf!
