INFO > Next year, Sire Records turns 50. The US-based independent label was founded in 1966 by Seymour Stein and Richard Gottehrer. From its inception, Sire has served as a conduit through which underground acts, predominantly from the UK, can reach American audiences. As well as importing material from across the pond, Sire has signed several influential and successful US artists, including: Ramones, Talking Heads, Dead Boys, Richard Hell, and Madonna. Stein is often credited for applying the genre description ‘New Wave’ as he disliked the negative connotations of ‘Punk’.

The retrospective box set “Just Say Sire” was released in 2005 to commemorate the label’s 30-year association with Warner Brothers as its distributor. The collection’s value is questionable, given that more than half of the haphazardly organized tracks were merely licensed by Sire from other labels. Even still, the artist and song selections confirm that Seymour Stein has a discerning ear for innovative talent and tunes.
