Top 10: Remixes

Roland TB303For this month’s exercise in list making, please compile your favorite remixes: productions that transform a track into something new, different, danceable, or perhaps completely unrecognizable. Any era, any style, from disco to dubstep—pick the mixes that tickle your fancy. Also, feel free to include commentary explaining your selections. And based on responses to prior Top 10 posts, I fully expect to see a few lists including more than ten tracks :-)

    • This list is amazing! Half of these I already love, half I’ve never heard. I’m creating a playlist, and I’m having trouble with:

21 New Order “Blue Monday 1988”
      Remix > Arthur Baker

and I can only find the 12″ version listed as:

      Engineer [Mix] – Tokes*
Producer [Additional Production], Remix – John Potoker
Supervised By [Production Supervisor On Remix] – Quincy Jones

Is there a different mix out there somewhere? Thank You So Much!

  4. 1. Goldie vs. Rabbit In The Moon – Inner City Life (Rabbit In The Moon’s Vocalic City) — any R.I.T.M. remix was out of this world, like Planet Soul – Set U Free, Keoki – Caterpillar, Sarah McLachlan – Close Your Eyes, etc. all belong in the top 10; but this Remix of Goldie’s hit remains unparalleled in terms of innovation and production

    2. Josh Wink – Higher State Of Consciousness (Tweekin Acid Funk) — Because it was just an “experimental” B-side, which turned into one of the biggest club hits of all time!

    3. Dune – Are You Ready To Fly (Jimmy Miller Remix) — For putting such an awesome ACID spin on a club classic!

    4. Eric B & Rakim – Paid In Full (7 Minutes Of Madness Rmx) — for incorporating a gazillion samples in one remix, all of which became famously incorporated into other songs in their own right!

    5. Jam & Spoon’s Hands On Yello – You Gotta Say Yes To Another Excess – Great Mission — Great song to begin with but J&S just made it awesome!

    6. Hitch-Hiker & Dumont – Journey Of Love (RaveBase Remix) — another song that “has it all” – EPIC!

    7. Dave Davis ‎– Transfiguration (Bonzai Rmx) — such a beautiful standout Arpeggio!!

    8. Spice Girls – Stop (Stretch ‘n’ Vern’s Rock & Roll Mix) — For turning an extremely cheesy and boring song into a massive Breakbeat stomper with sirens and all.

    9. Tori Amos – Professional Widow (Armand’s Star Trunk Funkin’ Mix) — Really just about any Armand Van Helden Remix is a top ten remix for abstracting the (often very cheesy) original beyond recognition and turning forgettable songs into massive dancefloor stompers — e.g.: Rednex – Cotton Eye Joe, Ace Of Base – Living In Danger (For The Big Clubs Mix), etc.

    10. Acen – Close Your Eyes (Optikonfusion!) (Remix I) — Because it contains the original Beatles sample of “Here Comes The Sun”

    10. 2 Bad Mice – Bombscare (’94 US Mix) — Like Acen, this song contains so many awesome samples!

  5. Wow, this was a tough one. I mean, how can you limit yourself to only 10? I have to list 15. And, believe me…this was no easy task, as I began with over 70 remixes. In some sort of alphabetical order…

    Remix – Clubzone

    Remix – Tiësto

Debbie Gibson – Electric Youth [Deep House Mix] (1989)
    Remix – Shep Pettibone

The Human League – Tell Me When [Utah Saints Mix 2] (1994)
    Remix – Utah Saints

Janet Jackson – The Pleasure Principle [The Shep Pettibone Mix] (1986)

Cyndi Lauper – Come On Home [Junior’s Soundfactory] (1994)
    Remix – – Junior Vasquez

Lustral – Everytime [Nalin & Kane Remix] (1999)
    Remix – – Nalin & Kane

ONO – Walking On Thin Ice [Pet Shop Boys Electro Mix] (2003)
    Remix – Pet Shop Boys

Pet Shop Boys – Up And Down [Tom Stephan Remix] (2009)
    Remix – Tom Stephan

Saint Etienne – Method Of Modern Love [Richard X Join Our Clique Remix] (2009)
    Remix – Richard X

    Sunscreem – When [K-Klassix Mix] (1995)
    Remix – K-Klass

Utah Saints – What Can You Do For Me [Klub Mix] (1993)
    Remix – David Morales

Yazoo – State Farm [Madhouse Mix] (1990)
    Remix – Dakeyne

I seem to like Shep Pettibone, huh?

    • thanks for the list! could you please upload these Shep’s remixes (and some of the others of his, if possible – the best ones in you opinion i mean)? except maybe the obvious ones he did for Pet Shop Boys and Madonna.

i know i’m asking a bit too much but if you have spare time, please share :-) i can wait too.

      • I’ll see about gathering 10 or so of my favorite Shep mixes and try to upload them in the next day or so. Some I may include are by Nia Peeples, Duran Duran, Thompson Twins and Will To Power.

        • thank you so much! please take your time i can wait. and please do include these as i only heard the Duran Duran one(s)

    • This is a bootleg collection I found online. Nothing rare, but it’s still pretty decent:

  6. i decided to go for complete reworks mostly

    —————————-
Saint Etienne – The Sea (PFM Mix)

Sunscreem – Perfect Motion (Boys Own Mix)
Remix – Terry Farley, Pete Heller

Camille – Home Is Where It Hurts (Steve Moore Remix)
i just love how Steve Moore turned a really-hard-to-listen-to
a capella original into a nice pop song.

Renegade Soundwave – Renegade Soundwave (The Leftfield Remix)

16B – Falling (Two Lone Swordsmen Remix)

Bomb The Bass – Bug Powder Dust (Kruder & Dorfmeister Session)

Tequilajazzz – Самолет (Flying So High Mix)
    Remix – Eclectica
well, if i were to say what is the best russian remix ever – it is this one. amazing rework of a brutal original (which is great too)

Lamb – B Line (Andy Votel Mix)

Beth Orton – Daybreaker (Four Tet Remix)

One Dove – Breakdown (Secret Knowledge Light Mix)

  7. 1. Dreamer (Rollo’s Big Mix) – Livin’ Joy

    2. Starship Troopers (Trouser Enthusiasts’ Iris Unguicularis Mix) – United Citizen Federation feat. Sarah Brightman

    3. Ain’t No Man (Brothers In Rhythm Mix) – Dina Carroll

    4. Outlaw (The Space Brothers Remix) – Olive

    5. The James Bond Theme (Da Bomb Mix) – Moby

    6. Hey Music Lover (Spatial Expansion Mix) – S’Xpress

    7. Lost in Space (Jason Nevins Lunar Landing Mix) – Apollo 440

    8. Listen To The Music (Rampantly Pleasurable Mix) – The Doobie Brothers

    9. Spiritual High (Elevation Mix) – Moodswings feat. Chrissie Hynde

    10. …….anything remixed by The Dancing Divaz in the 90s.

  8. In no particular order.

    1. Everything But The Girl – Missing (Chris & James Remix). While the Todd Terry version got the airplay this remix is superior. Probably my favourite remix ever.

    2. U2 – Lemon (Perfecto Remix). When Oakenfold was at the top of his game. While the remix for Even Better Than The Real Thing was good this was even better.

    3. Kylie Minogue – Confide In Me (Brothers In Rhythm Remix). Turned a pretty dull song into a deep dubby progressive monster. One of the best remixers of all time.

    4. Sunscreem – Looking At You (Jimmy Gomez Remix). There’s something very uplifting about this track. Another fantastic remixer.

    5. Madonna – What It Feels Like For A Girl (Above & Beyond Remix). Another dull song turned into something special. A&B are pretty much awesome in everything they do. Madonna liked this remix so much it was the version used when shown on MTV.

    6. Bobby Brown – Two Can Play That Game (K Klass Remix). I find R&B dull but when remixed well it sounds great. Top class piano driven remix. Gave Mr Brown his biggest hit in the UK.

    7. Mariah Carey – Dreamlover (David Morales Remix). Mariah Carey loved this so much she re-recorded the lyrics for this remix. A piano driven classic.

    8. Sam Ellis – Club Lonely (Luvdup Remix). Another one of my favourite renixers. Another track with great piano after a nice build up.

    9. Louise – Naked (Tony De Vit Remix). Much missed Tony De Vit turned this song into a hard house classic. It helps that Louise is gorgeous too.

    10. The Original – I Love You Baby (Dancing Divaz Remix). Picking one remix out of many DD remixes was hard but this was the track that first made me sit up and notice them.

A special mention goes out to the Trouser Enthusiasts who produced many fantastic remixes with even better names.

    • funny that Kylie’s Confide In Me was written and produced by Brothers In Rhythm as well)) the song isn’t dull one bit – on the contrary, it’s very smartly constructed, top notch production too, obviously. probably, the best Kylie song.

the remix is credited as Big Brothers Mix, but yeah Anderson and Seaman reworked their own original production into something very different (and very good, too)

    • I would have included a few of yours (ebtg…I love the Chris & James Remix, Mariah and Sunscreem’s “Looking At You”), had I gone with a larger list. Sunscreem was really fortunate with excellent remixes back in the day. Trouser Enthusiasts were responsible for a lot of other favorites of mine, especially “What Is Love?” by HoJo.

  9. You all have fantastic tastes – to be expected on Methods of Dance of course :). Love this post, here is my top 10:

    1. Dead or Alive – You Spin Me Round (Murder Mix)
    – Phil Harding
    2. Bananarama – Venus (Extended)
    – Phil Harding
    3. Grace – Not Over Yet (BT Spirit of Grace)
    – Brian Transeau
    4. Spice Girls – wannabe (motiv 8 remix)
    – motiv 8
    5. S’Express – hey music lover (Spatial Expansion)
    – William Orbit
    6. Pet Shop Boys – Opportunities (Shep Pettibone Mastermix)
    – Shep Pettibone
    7. Camouflage – Love is a Shield (William Orbit Dub)
    – William Orbit
    8. New Order – Touched by the Hand of God (12″)
    – Arthur Baker
    9. Baby Ford – Children of the Revolution (12″ club mix)
    -Jeremy Healy
    10. Keiichi Suzuki – Satellite Serenade (Transasian mix)
    -The Orb
    11. The Orb – Perpetual dawn (ultra bass II)
    -Andrew Weatherall
    12. Bananarama – Preacher Man (ramabanana alternative)
    -Shep Pettibone

The Orb and Motiv 8 on the same list? I say yes :)

Shep Pettibone and William Orbit – all time faves. Phil Harding is just pure genius. I could probably list 100 of my favorites without hesitation. So many!

    • Idea for a future post: 10 Favorite Shep Mixes

      • Actually, I wouldn’t mind assembling a custom collection of his remixes – should be able to put together a two disc set from CD sources, eh? I’d hit you up for some help with that.

        • i’d like that haha))

        • There was a forum I belonged to over 10 years ago that had a thread dedicated to Shep Mixes. I didn’t download much from the thread, because files were of varying quality, and I didn’t have the time or patience to go thru them all. I don’t have as much on CD as I used to, but I’m almost certain I can find more than what I’ve listed above. I’ll have to refresh my memory on his mixes, as there’s a few sites with comprehensive lists.

  10. As always, excellent lists from everyone – thank you.

And here’s 10 more remixes from me (no particular order):

Tori Amos “Professional Widow” (Star Trunk Funkin’ Mix)
    Remix > Armand Van Helden

Blur “Girls & Boys” (Pet Shop Boys 12” Mix)
Remix > Neil Tennant & Chris Lowe

Rozalla “I Love Music” (Overworld Mix)
Remix > Neil Claxton & Johnny Jay

Pet Shop Boys “Can You Forgive Her?” (Rollo Remix)
    Remix > Rollo Armstrong

Björk “Big Time Sensuality” (Lionrock Wigout Vox)
    Remix > Justin Robertson

Frankie Goes To Hollywood “Relax” (The Ollie J Mix)
    Remix > Ollie Jacobs

Annie Lennox “Little Bird” (Utah Saints Version)
Remix > Tim Garbutt & Jez Willis

Everything But The Girl “Missing” (Todd Terry Club Mix)
    Remix > Todd Terry

Sandy B “Make The World Go Round” (Deep Dish Remix)
Remix > Ali ‘Dubfire’ Shirazinia and Sharam Tayebi

Saint Etienne “Like A Motorway” (Skin Up, You’re Already Dead)
    Remix > Autechre

    • Tori, Blur and Annie would have made my Top 25. Actually, Annie was the last cut to get my list down to 15. And, what I find quite disturbing is…I am such a fan of Faithless (Rollo solo, Rollo & Sister Bliss, etc.), that none of his/their mixes made my Top 15. I have more mixes that I’ve thought of since I posted my initial list. I’ll add a new comment soon.

  11. Shep Pettibone & The Latin Rascals were the cut ‘n’ paste masters. Check out 5 Stars ” Somewhere Somebody” & Level 42’s ” Something About You”…. 5 Star is in my blog…..http://danceculture1818.blogspot.com/
    Plug!!!!

….I could go on for days!

  13. Ok I like the idea of Top 10 Shep Pettibone mixes – he is my all time favorite remixer. I am an obsessed collector but have not collected them all – too many to hunt down. Let me know if any of you are looking for any of his obscure mixes. Glad to help.

    1. Falco – Do it Again
Shep Pettibone did a great job with this, US only 12″ from 1989 – has not been reissued since.

    2. Shakespear’s Sister – Break my heart (dub)
Vocal was great but the extended dub on the promo 12″ was on another planet, brilliant.

    3. Debbie Gibson – Electric Yourh
Shep provided an acid house firestorm on this mix.

    4. Will to Power – Fading Away
This was the height of acid house and Shep’s mix reflected that.

    5. S’express – Hey Music Lover (Shep Zip mix)
Loads of disco samples but Shep did exceed expectations after William Orbit’s visionary spatial expansion mix.

    6. New Order – True Faith (Shep Pettibone Mix)
One of his very best and truly innovative. The dub mix is a work of art and sadly has not been reissued or remastered yet.

    7. Madonna – into the groove (Shep Pettibone mix)
this mix includes a stellar piano breakdown with an overall brilliant dance remix production.

    8. Communards – never can say goodbye (Shep pettibone extended)
Absolutely brilliant hi-nrg mix. I do not understand why the last part with vocal ad kind was edited down. Shep was in top form on this one – finally remastered on the Red reissue from 2012.

    9. Thompson Twins – Sugar Daddy (Velvet Rail)
Don’t get me wrong, in the name of love 88 was great. However this was better. Shep’s deep house makeover truly surpassed the original and brought forward a new era for the Thompson Twins. Only David Morales’ mix of the Saint came close to this one.

    10. Level 42 – lessons in love (Shep Club and Shep Final mix)
Shep simply added some additional drum programming and a few other keyboard riffs into this but he turned an already great song into a stunning remix and one of his very best.

    11. Jane Child – Don’t wanna fall in love (Shep Club mix)
Love cuts just like a knife. Enough said. Why didn’t warner bros release this commercially? A shame – brilliant.

Honorable mentions go to Shep’s mixes for Duran Duran, George Michael, Erasure, Betty Boo, additional Madonna mixes, Pet Shop Boys, Bros, Cathy Dennis, Nu Shooz, Paula Abdul, technotronic and last but not least, Wang Chung (Let’s Go). The Wang Chung was great but a bit excessive at the end….

Hope to hear from you guys on what your Shep favorites are…

    • I’ve done some edits/re-edits of mixes by Shep. I have a few of them up on my Soundcloud page. Just search for my user name. You might change your mind about ITNOL ’88, as my extended re-edit incorporates his Dub as well.

      • I checked out your re-edit of In the Name of Love by Thompson Twins on Soundcloud. Very, very nice job. I liked how you integrated the dub, that was great. Let’s compile a best of Shep mixes.

        • Let’s wait for Shelf to return, maybe we can make this a collaborative blog effort. For the moment, I’ll wait on uploading the 10 I had planned on.

  16. 1. Jamiroquai – Space Cowboy (David Morales Def Mix). So different but sympathetic to the original
    2. Robin S – Show Me Love (Stonebridge Club Mix). Often mistaken as the original version. The original version came out in 1989.
    3. The Source Feat. Candy Staton – You got the love (Erens Bootleg Version). Again often mistaken as the original. The original was from 1986 and was used on a weight loss video.

    5. New Order – Confusion (Pump Panel Reconstruction Mix). One word… Blade!
    6. William Orbit – Barbers Adagio In Strings (Ferry Corsten Remix). Miles better than the Tiesto version.
    7. Moony – I Dont Know (Jerome Isma-ae Remix). Progressive house at it’s best.
8.Freaks – The Creeps (Vandalism Vocal Remix). Electro house classic.
    9. Bodyrox ft Luciana – Yeah Yeah (D.Ramirez Vocal Club Mix). Genre defining song

    13. Kevin Duval – I feel love(Baggi Begovic Remix). Classic disco taken up a notch.
    14. Andy Mathee vs Billy Jack Williams – Party Children (Paramour Chupando Mango). House history and ELO in one song.
    15. Saint Etienne – Methods Of Modern Love (Cola Boy Remix) 90’s dance in a nutshell

  17. dance music stuff – INPO

    1. Chapterhouse – Pentamerous Metamorphosis (Blood Music retranslated by Global Communications) – without a doubt, one of the most unrecognizable remix efforts there has ever been.
    Absolutely beautiful.

    2. Maurizio – Ploy (Battersea Was An Island Of Mud Mix) – classic early 90’s remix by The Orb makes techno into something strange and other-worldy. So so good.

    3. BT – Embracing The Sunshine (Sasha’s Deeper Future Dub) – turning an already stellar aural trip into an even more uplifting, sprawling progressive house monster. Wow.

    4. Zero 7 – Destiny (Photek Remix) – Mr. Parkes makes the melancholy loneliness of the original version sound almost energetic and sweet. Definitely an interesting rethinking of the song.

    5. Saint Etienne ‎– The Sea (PFM Mix) – absolutely lush. one of the best remixes of SE that has ever been done. Essential listening for anyone.

    6. Prefab Sprout – If You Don’t Love Me (FSOL remixes) – the magic of FSOL-PNG meshed into pop music. Magical.

    7. Morgan King – I’m Free (William Orbit mix) – a master class in making an entirely new track with pieces of the original. An absolute monster of a tune.

    8. New Order – Blue Monday (Hardfloor remix) – adding multiple layers of bubbling and squelching and screeching 303s over the already moody track makes perfect sense. Some people hate this remix, but I think it’s made the track even better.

    9. Bloc Party – Where is Home? (Burial remix) – a dark, stepping rework that turns an underwhelmingly shitty song into something amazing. Well worth the cost of admission.

    10. Blue Foundation – Dressed In Black (Manual remix) – a beautifully done, graceful sounding remix that is like a breath of fresh air for your ears … quite nice.
