A View To A Kill (Extended Remix)

Being a big fan of both JB and DD, I was pleasantly surprised by the recent revelation on James Bond fan site MI6 that an official extended version of “A View To A Kill” exists.

The song was co-written by composer John Barry and Duran Duran as the title track for the 1985 James Bond film “A View To A Kill”, which marked Roger Moore’s last appearance as 007. It’s been nearly 30 years since the original release of the single, which topped the US Billboard Hot 100 chart in July 1985. American producer Steve Thompson created a 12″ mix with input from the band; however, bassist John Taylor nixed the track’s release:

“I wanted to keep a certain purity to the 3 minutes plus of “AVTAK”… some of the recent remixes had been rubbing me the wrong way. I was adamant about it—that there should be no extended versions or remixes. It was short sighted of me, I have since regretted it.”

We all make mistakes, JT. Methinks this mix could spark a 30th anniversary reissue, possibly for Record Store Day 2015.

  1. ji just love this – thanks for the heads-up Shelf ! Even more of those orchestral stabs and gated drums…what a beauty. Good idea on the RSD although i would be against RSD and its ethics. A 10″ or 12″ in white vinyl to mirror the uk 7″ would be perfect

  2. I am so glad this has surfaced! This extended remix still remains true to the original, it’s just longer with added blips and bleeps…how extended mixes were made back in the day. Sections of the song get to shine in different ways. too bad JT poo-pooed the mix…but, awesome it’s finally here!

  3. Oh wow! i have been hunting for an extended version since forever. I always believed that one did exist since it was the craze with 12’s during the 80’s. This little info helped me realize why my struggle was futile, so thanks for educating me! Glad it finally surfaced.

  4. My dream 12″…
Thankyou so much for sharing this!! :) :)

  5. Always nice to find out a bit of background info about some of these releases. Thanks.

  6. how do i download this?

  7. Nice find. Love Duran Duran!

  8. Please, take my money!!!

  9. Not surprisingly, the track has been removed from SoundCloud. There are some interesting comments over at SuperDeluxeEdition.

  10. just remember Chris we saw it here FIRST before SDE got hold of it !!

    • Thanks Nick :-) Although credit where credit is due – MI6 was the first site to post the track. Seems someone got it onto YouTube, but the track was yanked there as well. One of the commenters on SDE suggested that the master tape is M.I.A., which I find hard to believe.
