Peace And Light

01 Peace Of Mind
02 There Is A Light That Never Goes Out (Live)
03 Don’t Believe Everything You Hear (Live)
04 Sea Of Green

INFO > Sounding like they might originate from Southern California or Northern England, The Ocean Blue hail from Hershey, PA—the town that bills itself as ‘The Sweetest Place On Earth’ (personal aside: Hershey’s chocolates are crap compared to European confections). Formed in 1986, The Ocean Blue’s original line-up included: David Schelzel (vocals and guitar), Bobby Mittan (bass), Rob Minnig (drums), and Steve Lau (keyboards and saxophone). While still in high school, the band signed a three-album deal with Sire Records, debuting in 1989 with the striking single “Between Something And Nothing.”

The group’s dreamy, jangle pop sound is influenced by The Smiths, R.E.M., New Order, and Echo & The Bunnymen, all of whom The Ocean Blue has covered in live sets. Here’s the promotional video for the band’s 1991 single “Ballerina Out Of Control”:

Released in 1994, the “Peace And Light” EP was the quartet’s last release for Sire, and features a faithful live rendition of The Smiths’ classic “There Is A Light That Never Goes Out”, and a previously unreleased demo track, “Sea Of Green.”

LIVE > I saw The Ocean Blue earlier this month at Union Transfer in Philadelphia, and they’ve returned to the area to perform tonight at the more intimate space of World Cafe Live. The band is currently touring in support of their new album, “Ultramarine.”

  1. funny how the cover song can bring out the better part of his singing that he couldn’t do it with his/their own song. that’s unfortunate because their songs are good.

anyway youtube brought me to a better band ‘the wild swans’. just glad i found them.

  2. Cool Post ! thanks

  3. Shelf – did Riverside play at these concerts? how were they? i saw them a long time ago at Metropol in Pittsburgh. their first album “One” is amazing!
