FACT > The recent passing of Martin Rushent reminded me that this year marks the 20th anniversary of another profound loss: Martin Hannett, who died on 18 April 1991. Born just six weeks apart in 1948, contemporaries Rushent and Hannett were two of the most influential producers of their era; both employed new technologies to create innovative and unique sounds. Early in his career, Hannett worked under the pseudonym Martin Zero, and quickly developed a reputation for being idiosyncratic, obsessive, and controlling in the studio. Personality issues and questionable techniques aside, Hannett’s results are brilliant, evidenced by three posthumous collections showcasing the eclectic producer’s work. Factory issued “Martin” shortly after Hannett’s death, in tribute to his immense contribution to independent music.

NOTE > The OMD track included here, “Almost” (B-side of “Electricity”), is actually the version produced by Paul Collister. The Hannett mix may be found on the 2003 reissue of the band’s eponymous debut album.
