INFO > Today’s post is admittedly a bit cheesy, however there’s an event in Trenton, NJ at the end of this month that’s being billed as “The World’s Largest Freestyle Party.” Freestyle Spring Love will be staged at the Sun National Bank Center on 30 April, and boasts many bona fide hitmakers in the lineup, including: Debbie Deb, Judy Torres, Lil Suzy, Noel, and the Cover Girls.

Bill on the ‘wheels of steel’ in 1987

Although I wouldn’t be caught dead there (which, in Trenton, could literally happen), the concert does conjure a bit of nostalgia. As a teenager growing up in Philadelphia during the 1980s, I attended plenty of under-21 dance parties at area nightclubs. Freestyle was a big staple for local DJs, and while not my cuppa tea, the genre does have an infectious energy. My buddy Bill used to blast all the latest club hits as we cruised around in his crappy Ford LTD to our favorite hotspots: Electric Playground, Scintillations, Taylor’s, Mardi Gras, and Pulsations. Bill could bust quite a windmill back in the day—amazingly, he can still do it, but not without the repercussions of middle age…
